SPORTSMANSHIP
According to the NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations), “Good sportsmanship is viewed by the NFHS as a commitment to fair play, ethical behavior and integrity. In perception and practice, sportsmanship is defined as those qualities which are characterized by generosity and genuine concern for others. The ideals of sportsmanship apply equally to all activity disciplines. Individuals, regardless of their role in activities, are expected to be aware of their influence on the behavior of others and model good sportsmanship.”
FUNDAMENTALS OF SPORTSMANSHIP
-
- Show respect for self and others at all times.
- Show respect for the officials. Good sportsmanship implies the willingness to accept and abide by the decisions of officials.
- Know, understand and appreciate the rules of the contest. Good sportsmanship suggests the importance of conforming to the spirit as well as the letter of the rules.
- Maintain self-control at all times. Prevent the desire to win from overcoming rational behavior.
- Recognize and appreciate skill in performance regardless of team affiliation.
Code of Conduct
Coaches shall exhibit at all times the fundamentals of good sportsmanship and act as role models for student athletes. Furthermore, all coaches are expected to compete at the highest level possible while maintaining the following: positive attitude, ethical behavior, respect for all individuals involved and most of all disciplined self-control.
Athlete Code of Conduct
It must be clearly understood that participation in athletic activities in the Malden Public Schools is a privilege- not a right- extended to those students who conform to the rules and regulations of eligibility and behavior set by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (M.I.A.A.) and the Malden Public Schools. A student must be present on the day in order to participate in an activity. The student athletes who exercise their privilege of participation in athletics are representing their school, community, family, and themselves, and therefore assume a greater responsibility for their behavior. The student participating must represent the Malden Public Schools and the ideals that it stands for and must act in a manner, which illustrates ideals of leadership, high moral character, loyalty, and academic “good standing”. Positive and good behavior outside of Malden High School is considered part of the student-athlete’s responsibility. Infractions outside of school may lead to disciplinary action, including dismissal from a team.
